LIMA — Local musicians have a chance to wail at the monthly Allen County Blues Jam, being held Sunday at the Twist and Shout.

“This provides area musicians a chance to play music with a variety of people they may not otherwise perform with,” said Jim Miller, an accomplished musician in his own right and a member of the sponsoring Allen County Blues Society. “It’s people coming to the jam and putting their name on a board to play, and we make up the bands as we go."

Indeed, participants get a name of a piece and a key, and the rest is spontaneous combustion.

Priming the pump is an already well-known area band. This month, it’s That Lousy Band. And always popular performers are the Minor Blues.

“The Minor Blues are comprised of kids 8 to 17 years, and sometimes older, who are learning music and rehearsing as a band. We provide them with guidance and etiquette in performing, and they try it out at these jam sessions,” Miller said.

“You know, they are just learning that there are certain things you do and don’t do. For example, if you play guitar, you have to learn you’re not supposed to play all the time. Let the other instruments have their chance. Sort of being polite, musically. It’s just overall concepts like that being taught,” Miller said.

And the group will also perform with Miller at Square Fair again this year, as well as Rally in the Square and some other local events.

“We want to get them out to perform and help them understand what it takes to be a professional musician. And, they really are good,” Miller said.
