LIMA — You’ll be seeing red this week at the Allen County Fairgrounds when the International Harvester’s Red Power Round-Up pulls in Wednesday for four days of all things red.

“This is the first time this has ever come to Lima. It’s a celebration of anything that’s Harvester, so that could be freezers to big tractors,” said Larry Lanker, publicity chairman for the 24th annual show. If this year’s event follows the typical national show, there will be 1,000 big tractors on hand, and a gate of about 20,000 people.

Today known as Navistar International Corporation, the International Harvester Co. began in 1902 when J.P. Morgan merged McCormick Harvesting Machine Co. and Deering Harvester Co. with three smaller agricultural firms to form International Harvester. For years, its Farmall tractor was the industry standard.

However, as the company expanded into other areas, it’s profits began to drop in its primary line.

The company sold off its agricultural division in 1985, after which time its Case IH brand began.

Although no new tractors bearing the old IH logo can be displayed, there will be plenty of older IH products on hand.

“Well, in my case, my grandfather bought a red tractor in 1949, and I still have it. It’s a brand people just pass down. Most of what comes to the show is the older stuff, when it was still pure International Harvester,” Lanker said.

This show is being handled by IHC Ohio Chapter 6. “There are 35 (IHC) chapters in Ohio. There’s one in Canada and one in Sweden. At the annual show, we vote on where the show will be and this year for the first time, it will be Lima,” Lanker said.

Along with IH equipment, there will be lots of entertainment going on throughout, as well as competitions, and food. “It’s really good entertainment, a parade every day, and fair food,” Lanker said.

And one or two tractors. Naturally, all red.
