Letter: New school buildings behind sidewalk mess
Once again, an unfortunate byproduct of the Lima schools building project is raising its ugly head. I’m speaking of the University Boulevard project.
Westwood was opened in 1959. Since that time, students have walked down University. I walked that road to Milton Avenue, where I live, from April 1968 to June 1974. Now, after 51 years of having no trouble, University is no good anymore? Give me a break! That street that I still walk on to this day is fine. I just slow down when I drive on it when students are released. The only change is that students also walk down Milton Avenue unlike all the students turning left on Cornell back during my Westwood days. When Westwood and West were both open for a short period of time, no problems arose. Even if this project takes place, who or what is going to make and force all of those kids to walk on the sidewalks?
Property owners are going to lose a lot of property. This is a waste of money and time, just like the new buildings are.
How will the walkways be put in where University meets Singleton and Milton? The house that sits where University Y’s is in the path of an alley. There is supposed to be an alley between Allentown and Milton that never was put in. I wonder what the city engineers have to say about that.
If the people of Lima would have voted property with their heart, as I did, instead of with their wallets, the Westwood Warriors would still be on Cable Road and the West Titans would still be on College Avenue. This neighborhood would remain the same, untouched, instead of being torn up.
