Soldier sees many things in war

My name is Charles H. Croy. I was born in Dola in Hardin County. I was inducted into the Army in the infantry Aug. 7, 1943. My basic training was in the Tank Destroyers, Camp Hood, Texas, for 12 weeks. After training I went to Camp Carson, Colo., for mountain maneuvers. We had pack boards and mules. This program fell by the wayside. I went back to the East Coast and left Camp Patrick Henry Virginia for overseas. After nine days on the high seas, I landed in Oran in North Africa, stayed only a few weeks. This was the African Middle East. I earned three bronze stars. I drove a two and a half ton truck with a canvas top, hauling supplies and bringing back vets who had minor cuts and bruises. I have seen many, many things in the war but cannot talk about them. In 1944, I had jaundice and was in a German Hospital for three months. I am glad to be a World War II veteran and proud to have served my country. Being young and going to war, you have to look out for yourself because no one will do it. I came home in 1946.
