COLUMBUS — Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel called the 19 recruits the Buckeyes signed on Wednesday “a special class.”But he dropped some hints he’s still hoping it could get a little more special in the next few days. The new group of Buckeyes is heavy on highly rated offensive linemen, defensive linemen, defensive backs and wide receivers.Three offensive linemen — Mike Adams of Dublin Coffman, Michael Brewster of Orlando, Fla., and J.B. Shugarts of Klein, Texas — are among the most prominent names in the group.  All three have been rated among the top 100 recruits nationally by several scouting services.Nine of the recruits are from Ohio, four are from Florida and one each is from Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Texas. But the big question still hovering over Ohio State’s recruiting class, along with those of Michigan, Penn State and maybe Oregon, is what quarterback Terrelle Pryor will do.Pryor, rated the No. 1 recruit in the country and who was rumored to be favoring Ohio State, said Wednesday he will take more time to decide where he will play next year.Ohio State’s coaches have made so many trips to Pryor’s hometown of Jeannette, Pa., that Tressel was offering restaurant recommendations to reporters who made the trip over there.NCAA rules prohibit coaches from talking about unsigned recruits, but Tressel alluded to the Pryor situation a couple of times at his signing day press conference.“We’re still recruiting as we speak. I think we’re allowed to say we’re still recruiting the quarterback position,” the OSU coach said.“It is unusual,” he said, when asked about Pryor’s decision not to decide.Later, referring to the size of Ohio State’s recruiting class, he said, “Being at 19 or 20 is right where we want to be. Twenty-one might be a problem. Twenty would be just right.”Indirectly, he indicated that not getting Pryor would be a disappointment. “I think we had planned on having a quarterback in this class,” Tressel said.  Pryor said Wednesday he is now considering OSU, Michigan, Penn State and Oregon.“I didn’t get enough time to get involved in the recruiting process,” he said at his own press conference.Tressel called Brewster and Shugarts, who have already enrolled at OSU, the leaders of this year’s recruiting class. But those leaders found themselves answering more questions about Pryor than about themselves on Wednesday.“I wish I knew that,” Brewster said, when asked what Pryor is going to do. “But he has to do what he has to do. He just has to find out what he wants to do. It’s a small town. So many people are talking to him. He’s just got a ton of pressure on his shoulders.”Every year at places like Ohio State, almost every recruit is highly ranked. It remains to be seen which, if any, of this year’s new players will be contributors in the fall. When Shugarts took the microphone at Tressel’s press conference, he showed there is still some work to be done with the freshmen on and off the field.Talking about this year’s recruits, he said, “You can be prepared for a lot of national championships.”As soon as those words came out of his mouth, Tressel didn’t change expression, but quickly said, “Easy, J.B.”
