Letter: People, not dogs, are the problem
In response to the Feb. 5 editorial, “State lawmakers wrong about pit bulls,” I say, “Stop the ignorance.”
The Lima Police Department and City Council need to stop punishing dogs and do something about the real problem: Punish the people who abuse these innocent animals.
Chief Kevin Martin and City Council keep referring to drug dealers using pit bulls as weapons. They need to care enough and open their eyes to the problem, and that is people. They make these dogs mean by beating them, starving them, fighting them, etc. These dogs were not bred to be violent.
Do some research and quit taking the easy way out. Any dog can be made mean. Some small breeds bite more than pit bulls do.
Lima should not be allowed to make its own rules about dogs. No dog is born mean. They do not think like that. Since we have domesticated these animals, they look to us for love, so if any dog is abused, they do what they know, not what they are born with.
Lima and LPD, fix the problem. Punish these people, not the dogs. Dogs can be rehabilitated to be kind, loving animals. After all the heinous things Michael Vick did to his dogs, all of them were placed in good houses except one. They are now kind, loving dogs because love is what they are shown now.
Nobody wants to stand up for all the animals that are abused and neglected, and by doing this, LPD and City Council are adding to the abuse. All animal lovers, please make your voices heard.
