Dennis L. Newland, 63, died at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 15, 2009, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 6, 1946, in Lima to Theodore and Hazel Marshall Newland, who preceded him in death. On June 5, 1964, he married Wanda Coolidge, who survives in Elida.
Mr. Newland was a graduate of Alger High School. He had been a machinist and tool crib attendant at Fruehauf/Holland for 36 years. He took great pride in his work. He loved his children and grandchildren more than anyone. One of his greatest joys was spending Christmas morning surrounded by his family. He was a very welcoming person, who never knew a stranger. He was known for his homemade chili and potato salad. He will be greatly missed by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Survivors also include two sons, Chris (Rhonda) Newland, of Bluffton, S.C., and Chad (Melody) Newland, of Elida; two daughters, Donna (David) McClurg, of Wapella, Ill., and Nancy (Jeff) Rhinock, of Cincinnati; 11 grandchildren, Joshua (fiancée Jennifer), Madison and Noah McClurg, Meagan (Ryan) Gill, Allison and Aaron Newland, Briley and Hayden Rhinock, and Caleb, Kylie and Tyler Newland; and five sisters, Janet (David) Taflinger, of Lima, Joyce (Harold) Fry, of Ada, Betty (LeRoy) Watkins, of Alger, Barbara (Charles) Castle, of Ada, and Patty (Bob) Lawrence, of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Leroy and Eugene Newland; and two sisters, Brenda Benchoff and Marilyn Corley.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Elida. Pastors Tim Burden and Gary Rode will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel, and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Delphos Visiting Nurses or Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
