Local economy won’t be focus
Comments 0 | Recommend 0As I read The Lima News on Monday afternoon, I was struck by an article that someday could affect me. The story was about a man who is an American citizen and married to a foreign citizen who has not yet received her Social Security number.
The government is sending out stimulus checks at the moment, and this man will not receive a check. I was shocked that an American citizen, who paid taxes just like everyone else, will not receive a stimulus check. I was outraged by this article. So, I went on the Internet to the IRS Web site and, sure enough, there is no loophole for him. It explained, "Both people listed on a "married filing jointly" return must have valid SSNs to qualify for the payment - if only one has a valid SSN, neither can receive the payment."
I am dating a man from Austria, and we have talked about possibly being married one day. He is planning to move here and become a citizen. If we receive stimulus checks in the future, could this affect me in getting a check being married to him? Probably. So, I have decided to send my stimulus check to my boyfriend in Austria. He has agreed to buy me something from there that is not American made. I know my $300 will not affect the economy, but it is all I can do. The checks were meant to stimulate our economy, but because the government does not recognize the man in the article, I will not recognize it either. I can't wait to see what he brings me!
