Alfred D. Sims, 88, died at 7:05 p.m. Feb. 28, 2010, at Lima Memorial Health System.

He was born July 16, 1921, in Coshocton to Encil and Nettie Ramsey Sims, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 13, 1945, he married Elsie Luopa, who survives.

Mr. Sims retired in 1978 as an industrial arts teacher and athletic director from Lima City Schools. He had also been an assistant football and basketball coach at Lima South and Lima Senior high schools. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, where he had served as chairman on the church council and taught Sunday school. He enjoyed woodworking and sporting events. He was a graduate of Malta-McConnelsville High School and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ohio University, Athens. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a pilot with Fighter Squadron VF-87 aboard the USS Ticonderoga.

Survivors also include a daughter, Patricia Sims Hoover, of Toledo; a granddaughter, Claire Marie Hoover, of Toledo; a brother-in-law, Dale Bailey, of McConnelsville; and three nieces, Marcia (Roger) Wittenberg, of Michigan, Linda Taylor, of Pennsylvania, and Kathy (Bob) Finkbeiner, of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil L. Sims; a sister, Jean Bailey; a son-in-law, Robert Hoover; a sister-in-law, Lorena Sims; and a niece, Sonja Reed.

Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church. The Rev. Gust Wuorinen will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, with military rites.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Arrangements are by Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes.
