State tries drinking water treatment on Grand Lake algae

COLUMBUS - A method for treating drinking water will be used to attack toxic algae that hurt summer business at Ohio's largest inland lake.

Beginning Thursday, the state planned to spray about 40,000 gallons of liquid aluminum sulfate over test areas in Grand Lake St. Marys, located between Toledo and Dayton.

This summer's blue-green algae on the lake led to warnings that scared off tourists.

Scott Fletcher with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the chemical - commonly known as alum - poses no danger to people. He tells The Columbus Dispatch officials hope it will force phosphorous that feeds the bacteria to the lake bottom.

Fletcher says if the test is successful, the state could treat the whole lake with alum.
