Mary Jane Hawk, 87, died at 6:25 p.m. Jan. 4, 2010.

She was born July 29, 1922, in Prestonsburg, Ky., to William C. and Angie Johnson Adams, who preceded her in death. In April 1942, she married Robert Franklin Hawk, who died in February 1963.

Mrs. Hawk retried as an educator from Shawnee Local School District, where she had been a psychological counselor for more than 30 years. She had also taught at Ohio Northern University, Ada, and Wright State University. She attended the St. Mary’s School of Nursing, Huntington, W.Va. She received her bachelor’s degree in education in 1959 from ONU and her master’s degree in 1962 from Indiana University. She was a member of OEA, SEA, OSCA, Phi Delta Kappa, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Who’s Who in America. She was a member of Westside United Methodist Church, where she served on the board. She served on several boards, including the PSA3 Area Agency on Aging, the Allen County Children’s Services and the zoning appeals board for American Township. In 2009, she was inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon K. (James) Brenneman, of Lima; two grandchildren, Heather (Abel Amador III) Brenneman, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Aaron (Nicole) Brenneman, of Lima; and three great-grandchildren, Madison, Killian and Wyatt Brenneman.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Woodrow, Garland and Roy Adams; and a sister, Dixie Webb.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel. The Rev. William Kronk will officiate.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Services.
