Veteran participates in Honor Flight
On Oct. 24 I had the good fortune of participating in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. What a great experience it was for me. There were 59 participants on our flight, including both military veterans and their guardians. The guardians were all volunteers. We flew out of the Dayton Airport on an Airtran flight at 6:40 a.m. and after a very smooth flight arrived at the Baltimore-Washington Airport about 75 minutes later. We also visited the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and the U.S. Air Force Memorial. Because of the rain in mid-day, we were only able to drive past the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and the Iwo Jima memorials. We were served a delicious lunch between memorials. What really impressed me most, other than the World War II Memorial, were the many strangers who would approach our group and say “thank you” for your service to this country. The folks from Honor Flight and our assigned “guardians” looked out for our every need as the day progressed. We left Washington about 8 p.m., and after a short flight, arrived back at the Dayton airport. As we were picking up our luggage, an Air Force Honor Guard from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base greeted our group in an impressive ceremony. What a great ending for a fabulous day. I am so thankful to all involved in making this trip possible for me. It was truly a memorable day.
