Soldiers from the region who died in Afghanistan and Iraq
• Army Staff Sgt. Dennis J. Hansen, 31, originally from Lakeview, died Dec. 5, 2009, from injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit Dec. 3 with an improvised explosive device in Logar province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.
• Marine Staff Sgt. David S. Spicer, 33, of Zanesfield, a 1994 graduate of Benjamin Logan High School, died July 13, 2009, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was an explosive ordnance disposal technician assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade.
• Army Sgt. 1st Class Brian Naseman, 36, originally from New Bremen, died May 22, 2009, from injuries he received in a noncombat-related incident in Taji, Iraq. He was assigned to the 108th Forward Support Company, attached to 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Sussex, Wis.
• Army Staff Sgt. Jason E. Burkholder, 27, a graduate of Elida High School, died Feb. 8, 2009, from wounds suffered from a bomb in Afghanistan. He was with the 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry Regiment of Marion, Ill.
• Army Spc. Jon Michael Schoolcraft, 26, a graduate of Wapakoneta High School and Apollo Career Center, died Jan. 19, 2008, while on patrol from wounds suffered when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb. He was with the 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
• Army Spc. Christian Neff, 19, a graduate of Shawnee High School and Apollo Career Center, died Sept. 19, 2007, while on patrol from wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. He was with the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division in Fort Stewart, Ga.
• Army Spc. Jeremy Hodge, 20, a graduate of Ridgemont High School, died Oct. 10, 2005, when his armored convoy was hit by a bomb. He was with the Ohio Army National Guard 612th Engineers Battalion.
• Army Staff Sgt. Zachary Wobler, 24, a graduate of Ottawa-Glandorf High School, died Feb. 6, 2005, when he was shot by insurgents during a firefight in Mosul. He was assigned to the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division.
• Army Capt. Dennis Pintor, 30, a graduate of Elida High School, was killed Oct. 12, 2004, when an explosive device detonated near his patrol vehicle. Pintor was a member of the 20th Engineer Battalion from Fort Hood, Texas.
• Army National Guardsman Staff Sgt. Aaron Reese, 31, a graduate of Elida High School, died Dec. 10, 2003, after falling from a patrol boat into the Tigris River. He was the first Ohio Guardsman to die in Iraq.
• Marine Pfc. Christian Daniel Gurtner, 19, of Ohio City, died April 2, 2003. The Van Wert High School graduate was with the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. He was killed when his gun accidentally went off.
