Non-frosted: Third place ? Chewy Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

From Julia Vogt, Delphos1 cup butter flavor shortening1 cup light brown sugar, packed1/2 cup sugar1 1/2 teaspoons salt1 teaspoon baking soda2 eggs2 tablespoons milk (or sour cream)2 teaspoons vanilla extract2 cups unbleached bread flour1 cup dry oatmeal1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chipsCombine shortening and sugars until well blended. Add salt, soda, eggs, milk, vanilla; mix well. Gradually add flour. Add chocolate chips and nuts. Mix by hand. Chill for at least 6 hours or overnight. Roll into 1-inch balls and slightly press down. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 13 minutes or until done. Yields 3 dozen cookies.
