War experience a nightmare for soldier
November 11, 2009 10:13 AM
World War II seems like a long time away for me now facing 90! The greatest generation of them all! Wars keep happening for what reason who can explain? World War II was the worst of them all, hell, nightmares still in front of my mind.
Thanks to those in charge, I was given two weeks convalescence leave before our bid for freedom. The last war to end all wars, we were told. It didn’t happen but the bloody conflict with the Japs went on and on. However, President Truman thought differently. Dropping the A-bombs on Hiroshima, Nagasaki. Total population, major cities were wiped out.
World War II ended! Those very days! Peace on earth! My Canadian war bride, Maria, and I led the victory parade in my hometown Powhatan Point, Ohio. Now post war, freedom rings. The last 53 years in Lima, where a different war was fought seven years. America’s longest, intense, but nobody wants to talk about it: The Lima News/Lima Citizen. But a lot of good took place. Freedom of the press. The community was not better served. Look at it now.
I left the scene after it was all over. Got involved in total retail development. All over town. An Ohio City with not one but two malls versus downtown Lima. Our trade center brought shoppers from miles around, counties all over N.W. Central part of the state. Top sales attraction of the entire United States.
My job description called for raising a family, becoming a mature good citizen. I realized what I gave four and a half years in the Army. We’re proud of our track record. Lima, Allen County, our overall shopping center now our most important product. Family! Freedom rings.
