‘Don't abandon our new friends in Afghanistan'

My name is Bob Bennett, and I served in Vietnam from May 1967 to December 1968. I got there as a second lieutenant and left as a captain. I worked in military intelligence. I was stationed in Saigon for the first year and then down in the Mekong Delta region for the last six months of my second tour of duty.

I think what we were doing was much the same as Korea. Had President Nixon not stumbled over Watergate, he would have been like President Eisenhower.

I think the main lesson to be learned from Vietnam is to not abandon our new friends in Afghanistan because the Taliban is totally bad news for everyone, including the vast majority of the people who live there. They are just like the VC (Viet-Cong) were in South Vietnam.
