LIMA — Looking for one-of-a-kind art?
Look no farther than a student art auction, being held today at the Met Block Building.
“We're selling 30 pieces of student art, from children in first through 12th grade,” said Sally Windle, director of arts and magnet programs for Lima schools.
The pieces include watercolors, pastels, chalks and prints. All of them have been framed and matted by Kay VanMeter of ArtSpace/Lima.
“These pieces give you the freshness of the student perspective. They represent a new vision. They have enthusiasm and excitement and carry a general honesty. Kids are great storytellers in their art, and they're brave. They put it right out there, and they bring their own identity to the pieces,” Windle said.
Yet she's not surprised at the level of art shown in the works.
“I'm in the schools all the time, and I regularly purchase student art for my own home. We have art from first grade throughout, so these students are really tremendous artists,” she said.
Proceeds from the sale will go to Lima schools 5.99-mill combined operating and permanent improvement levy campaign.
“Our slogan is investing in our youth, and we're taking that to a very literal point in this sale,” Windle said.
