College presidents, directors of athletics and coaches seem united with the commissioners of the Bowl Championship Series conferences in opposition to a playoff system in major college football. They say they don't want to see the game professionalized.
Got news for you, guys: That ship has sailed. The only thing missing is paychecks for the players. And to that end there has been talk of compensating players beyond their scholarships. They bring in an awful lot of money and get relatively little in return.
Playoffs are standard in every other collegiate sport.
The arguments about protecting academic integrity and player welfare and bowl tradition don't wash.
It's unfortunate that the BCS commissioners won't budge at this time. But a playoff system is inevitable. It's what most fans want.
