Gladys E. Cox Briggs Baker

Coldwater - Gladys E. Cox Briggs Baker, 96, formerly of Lima, died at 4:45 a.m. Oct. 28, 2009, at The Gardens of Celina in Celina.

She was born Aug. 2, 1913, in Lima to Daniel and Anna Glick Cox, who preceded her in death. On Oct. 11, 1935, she married Dorse E. Briggs, who died May 19, 1991. On April 16, 1993, she married Luther Baker, who died Aug. 23, 1995.

Mrs. Baker attended Lima Central High School. She had a love of dancing and often talked about going to Lincoln Park and taking the Interurban to Russells Point to dance when she was young. In later years, she enjoyed the activities and square dancing at the Senior Citizens Center in Lima. She loved her pets and shared her home with assorted dogs and cats over the years. She enjoyed her music and flowers, bingo and playing cards with friends. She had worked at the Tuberculosis Hospital and at the Lima Convalescent Home.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald E. (Marlene) Briggs, of Indian Lake, and Steven C. (Cheryl) Briggs, of Lima; a daughter-in-law, Ethel M. (Patterson) Briggs, of Coldwater; 11 grandchildren, Phillip A. (Michele) Briggs, of Covington, Ga., Matthew (Elizabeth) Briggs, of Lima, Steven (Teresa) Briggs, of Columbus Grove, Lisa Miller, Kimberly Thorpe and Cynthia (Eric) Hall, all of Lima, April (Eric) Goodwin, of Coldwater, Jodie (Jeff) Frazier, of Forest, Stacie Williams, of Wapakoneta, Stephanie (Matthew) Green, of Uniopolis, and Amie Briggs, of Union City, Ind.; 34 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Vondale (Gail) Coon, of Lima.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis D. and Phillip M. Briggs; a granddaughter, Tameria Kay Briggs; three brothers, Russell, Roy and Cloyd Cox; a sister, Thelma Newland; and a special cousin, Lyetta Neil.

A celebration of life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel. Pastor Robert Wood will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
