SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP ó The Shawnee volleyball teamís season has ended prematurely.

The Indians exceeded the season limit of matches set by the Ohio High School Athletic Association by one match, so the team has been disqualified from postseason eligibility.

The tournaments are set to begin next week.

Shawnee athletic director Dick Heath is taking responsibility for the mistake that led to the disqualification. Heath said his mistake came in his calculation of invitationals, which count as three matches.

The OHSAA bylines allow volleyball teams 22 matches on 20 playing dates within the regular season. Shawnee has played 23 matches.

Shawnee was set to open Division II sectional play Wednesday against Van Wert at Lima Senior. Now, the Cougars will have a first-round bye.

Heath has spoken with the players and parents. He declined any further comment.

The Indians had a match scheduled against Lima Central Catholic today. The match has been cancelled.
