SPENCERVILLE — Shawnee’s boys and girls swept the big-school division of Saturday’s Spencerville Bearcat Invitational.

In the small-school races, Spencerville easily won the girls title, while St. Henry won the boys crown.

On the boys side, twins Garret Diltz (17:10) and Zach Diltz (17:14) finished 2-3 to lead the Indians to the team title in the Black Division.

The other three scorers for Shawnee included Joe Miller (sixth, 17:59.9); Brandon Sevitz (20th, 18:25.8) and Josh Vondran (38th, 19:07).

Lima Central Catholic finished third in the Black Division. The Thunderbirds were led by Jim Kesner (fourth, 17:15) and Noah Burkholder (fifth, 17:44.7).

Ottawa-Glandorf finished fifth place in the big school race. The Titans were led by Tyler Verhoff (10th, 18:08.5).

In the girls race (Black Division,) it was a trio of Shawnee runners that led them to the title.

Freshmen Molly Scott (20:38) and Adrienne Pohl (20:38.3), along with Emily Wolery (20:42.3) were the first three finishers for Shawnee.

The final two scorers for the Indians were Amanda Kuhlman (16th, 22:09. 4) and Maggie MacDonald (18th, 22:15.6).

Emily Krumel led Lima Central Catholic to a sixth-place finish, placing 13th overall (21:47.5).

Ottawa-Glandorf finished fifth in the girls race. The Titans were led by Dana Lanwehr (22nd, 22:32.7).

Shawnee coach Russ Holly said his teams ran solid races on Saturday.

“All my guys are young pups,” Holly said. “My top five (runners) are all underclassmen.

“My girls had a good week. They set some goals earlier in the week and today they were almost right on the money.”

In the small-school division (Red Division), Spencerville’s girls dominated, winning easily over a strong Covington squad. Spencerville recorded a solid score of 28 points, compared to Covington’s 53.

The Bearcats placed four runners in the top nine overall spots. Lyndie Brown won the race in 19:18.6. The rest of the scorers for Spencerville included Ashley Gilroy (third, 19:42.4); Kelli Ley (fourth, 20:27.5); Alexa Brown (ninth, 21:12.9) and Kari Wisher (11th, 21:27.2).

Ottoville, who finished fourth as a team, was led by Shayla Siefker’s second-place finish (19:33.5).

In the boys Red Division race, Spencerville’s Kevin Lenhart led the way, winning in 16:43.6. As a team, however, the Bearcats finished third (81). St. Henry won the team title (51), while New Knoxville came in second (59).

Tiffin Carnival

In the girls Division III race at the Tiffin Carnival, Minster had a strong showing, winning the team title with 72 points, compared to second-place Versailles’ 165 points.

Maria Dahlinghaus led Minster with an eighth-place finish in 19:48.

The Minster boys led the list of area DIII schools, finishing seventh. Top runner for the Wildcats was Francis Slonkosky, finishing second (16:52).

In the girls Division II race, Coldwater had the best local finish, coming in fourth in a 31-team field. Freshman Jill Kanney led the Cavaliers, finishing 17th in 19:43.

Van Wert finished eighth in the DII race. Lauren Taylor led the Cougars with an eighth-place finish in 19:23.

In the boys Division II race, Defiance had the best local finish, coming in fourth out of 48 teams. The top finisher for Defiance was Trevin Flickinger (seventh, 16:19).

The Van Wert boys finished 14th in DII competition. The top placer for the Cougars was freshman Jared Fleming (19th, 16:42). Jacob Bagley was the next finisher for Van Wert (17:19).
