BATH TOWNSHIP — Lima Senior’s volleyball team boasts a great deal of experience.

After Monday’s three-game sweep of Bath, the Spartans probably gained a little more wisdom.

Despite winning in three straight games — 25-20, 25-16, 25-23 — Lima Senior (12-4) found themselves in a battle for two of the three games.

In the first game, the score was tied six times before the Spartans prevailed. In the third contest, Bath (4-12) kept coming back, knotting the game seven times, before finally succumbing to the Spartans.

Lima Senior coach John Zell said his team lost its focus in Monday’s non-league match.

“In the first and third games, it was about intensity,” Zell said. “We did not play with the intensity that we needed to. (Bath coach) Jody (Benda) has her team playing really well. They have really improved since the summer.”

Lima Senior has eight seniors on its roster, while Bath has just one.

Benda, who took over the Bath program this year, said her team is showing improvement each night out.

“This team is very young,” Benda said. “We have one senior and one junior. They are working hard, staying positive and their level of play is improving.”

Senior outside hitter Sam Dunifon led Lima Senior with nine kills and three aces. Teammate Briana Butler dished out 10 assists.

Sophomore Liz Brock led Bath with seven kills, while senior teammate Jordan Cogley recorded six kills.

Zell said his bench has been contributing really well in the past couple of matches.

“Aja Goare has been out with an injury,” Zell said. “The one player that has really stepped up is Shequella Greeno. She’s done a nice job filling in for us.”

Zell said is hopeful that Goare will return to the lineup very soon.

“Aja’s a really good player,” he said. “She’s really good on the serving. She’s a very good hitter and passer. It’s unfortunate, but it’s good that we had people step up. I want to get to full strength as we head toward tournament.”

Benda said she feels that her team will continue to improve.

“We’re going to take some lumps,” Benda said. “But, I think in the future, Bath will be a team to contend with.”
