ST. MARYS - The Heritage Trails Park District announced two events in celebration of National Trails Day on Saturday.
The Miami and Erie Canal Trails Day Celebration will meet at the Lockkeepers House in New Bremen for a short ceremony at 10 a.m. Then walkers are invited to take a hike. Set your own pace and take a short or long walk. Learn the sport of Geo Caching — modern-day treasure hunting. Stop in at the Lockkeepers House between 10 a.m. and noon and learn from experts about this family fun activity.
The Take a Wild flower Hike at the Dr. Elizabeth Yahl Kuffner Nature Preserve will be from 2 to 3 p.m. hosted by the Heritage Trails Park District. Park Director Allison Brady will help identify the profusion of woodland wild flowers in this newest park. The hike will be an easy pace and there are benches to sit and rest along the trail. Insect repellent and old shoes are recommended.
The Dr. Elizabeth Yahl Kuffner Nature Preserve is located north of St. Marys. Head north on state Route 66, go over the Interstate 33 bridge, just after the bridge turn left onto county Road 66A. Travel north one mile on 66A and look for the Nature Preserve on the right.
