I appreciate 16½ years working at the W.O.R.T.H. Center. My tenure included four promotions from a driver to administrator, honored with 16 commendations and staff member of the year three times.
My position, as directed, was to lead staff in guiding residents toward success preventing repeat offenders by going through the program once. Some issues at the time of my promotion were residents going through the program quickly without any regard for state mandates or protocols, resulting in residents not being prepared to re-enter their communities.
Righting the course required administration making adjustments ensuring compliance with state mandates. To accomplish this, staff was required to do the job they were hired to do, causing hard feelings. The administration tried to help by increasing the salaries $2,000 after no increases in six years. Certain members of the staff considered this an “insult,” making matters worse.
The governing board (appointed by judges and commissioners from the counties served) received an anonymous letter making false accusations against administration, threatening a lawsuit if their demands were not met. State policies are constructed, making it easier to terminate administration, than a person in a line position. After being on leave for 10 weeks, both of us were terminated.
This has caused untold grief and hardship for my family by losing the job that I was good at and truly loved. I’m concerned for residents, fearing programming will return to the standard of putting them through quickly disregarding their growth, being a detriment to us all.
