Thomas A. Downey, 99, passed away at 12:49 p.m. July 10, 2013, at Lima Convalescent Home.
He was born Nov. 13, 1913, in Lima to Thomas and Anna Ley Downey, who preceded him in death. On May 23, 1935, he married Amy Maurer Downey, who preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 2002.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas J. Downey, of Northville, Mich., and Michael D. Downey, of Canton; two daughters, Julianne Joseph, of Lima, and Sheila (Sam) Sarkisian, of Parma. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Thomas M. (Lisa) Downey, of Northville, Mich., Stephen (Lisa) Downey,of Northbrook, Ill., Anne Marie (Patrick) Feerick, of Glenview, Ill., Meghan Downey, of Chicago, Colleen Downey, of Cleveland, Julie Downey, of Chicago, Pamela (David) Rathke, of Golden, Colo., Dianne (Tyson) Parish, of Lima, Heather (Brent) Dawson, of Lima, Peter Sarkisian, of Parma, Ara Sarkisian, of Los Angeles, and Amy (Tyler) Vlakovich, of Los Angeles; and 15 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Jean Ann Downey, of Chicago, and Elaine Maurer, of Celina; and a brother-in-law, William Tarr, of El Paso, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Thomas was preceded in death by three brothers, the Rev. Joseph Downey, S.J., John Downey and Bernard Downey; and three sisters, Rose Marie Gradwohl, Dorthy Mohler and Zita Tarr; and a great-grandson, Joshua Parish.
Mr. Downey was a graduate of St. John High School, Lima. He retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad. He then worked in manufacturing, warehousing and had been a part-time addiction counselor. He was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church, and its Holy Name Society. He was a member of Right to Life and the Knights of Columbus Council 2661.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Father Mike Houston as Celebrant. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Siferd-Orians Funeral Home, where a parish wake service will be conducted at 7:45 p.m.
Mr. Downey’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Lochhaven Apartments, Lima Convalescent Home, St. Rita’s Hospice and to the waitresses at Westgate Bowling Lanes for the kindness and care shown to their father over the years.
