LIMA — A new event this fall, HeartChase, will focus on heart health and getting people active.

HeartChase combines “The Amazing Race,” and “Minute to Win It,” said Bob Baxter, president and CEO of St. Rita’s Health Partners and executive committee chairman of the event.

Teams of two to five people can register for $20 at for the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at Memorial Hall. The events will happen within a one-mile radius downtown. Teams score points for completing tasks and complete them at their own pace; it is not a race. Each team needs a smartphone (iPhone or Android) to play because teams tally points using QR codes at stations.

St. Rita’s Medical Center is the presenting sponsor. Baxter said the hospital is excited to be part of an event that promotes healthful eating and active living. This event is new for Lima, and the group organizing it hopes to make it a tradition.

Baxter pointed to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study that listed Allen County 83rd of Ohio’s 88 counties in healthy behaviors.

“By introducing HeartChase to the community, we are encouraging our friends and neighbors to focus on their heart health,” Baxter said. “Making healthy choices can be fun, and that is exactly what HeartChase is all about.”

HeartChase is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association, which has a goal of reducing cardiovascular diseases by 20 percent by 2020. Team members raise money for the American Heart Association. The goal for the event is $40,000, and already $11,000 has been raised.
