Crash injures 4; I-75 closed

LIMA — Four people were taken to the hospital Saturday evening after a three-car, chain-reaction crash on Interstate 75 that closed down the southbound lane for more than a half-hour.

State troopers were handling a crash with a 19-year-old who struck a barrier in a construction zone when the other crash occurred about 6:30 p.m. just south of state Route 81, said Sgt. Bob Burd of the Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers stopped traffic to bring in a tow truck. During that time, a car driven by David W. Rutledge, 69, of Lima, ran into the rear of a stopped car driven by David L. Reese, 65, of Mount Cory, Burd said.

Reese’s car was forced into a car driven by John C. Bowen, 46, of Hamilton, that also was stopped. Both Reese and Rutledge were taken to the hospital along with a passenger from each of their cars.

Bowen’s car had little damage and he was able to drive away from the scene, Burd said.

Rutledge was diving at or near highway speed, which is 55 mph, when the crash occurred, Burd said.
