Lima barbers win Service to Mankind award

March 26, 2013

LIMA — Two barbers who started a program that provides children with bikes at Christmas were named the 2013 Lima Noon Sertoma Service Club’s Service to Mankind Award winners.

Barbers Jim Sherrick and Art Brinkman received the award Tuesday during a luncheon for the service club.

“We just showed up for lunch and were totally surprised,” Sherrick said. “We just did it to get bikes for kids who could not afford one.”

The bike giveaway started in 2006 when the two men, who are in business together at Silver Shears, decided to skip giving each other Christmas gifts, instead wanting to do something for children.

After years of watching North Middle School students walk by their shop while others rode by on bicycles, they decided to buy two bikes that year for children. That snowballed into more than 100 children receiving bike each year.

“I never ever dreamed that this would happen,” Brinkman said.

The Service to Mankind Award is given annually to a person or people who have done a lot to benefit the community. The recipient typically is someone who does not seek public recognition for what he does and rarely receives it.
