Ernest Nickles inducted into Baking Hall of Fame

Ernest Nickles was inducted into the Baking Hall of Fame by the American Society of Baking on March 4 in Chicago.

His father, Alfred Nickles, immigrated from Switzerland and started the Alfred Nickles Bakery, Inc. in Navarre, Ohio, in 1909. Ernest joined his father in the family business in 1925 and succeeded his father as president and CEO in 1949, when Alfred Nickles died.

Ernest Nickles is credited with transitioning Nickles Bakery from a company with 600 routes serving homes to a wholesale baking company with more than 500 routes serving groceries, restaurants and institutions. He was the companyís first sales manager. During his 70-year career with Nickles, Ernest was responsible for the company acquiring five baking companies in Ohio and in Indiana. Nickles' distribution territory covers seven Midwestern states. Ernest Nickles died in 2009.

Today, Alfred Nickles Bakery, Inc. has three bakeries in Ohio, including one in Lima. The company employs 1,600 people, with 10 of these employees being Nickles descendants.

Cleary Building Corp employees recognized

Cleary Building Corp honored three Findlay-based men recently at a regional sales meeting.

Fred Zibbel achieved the Presidentís Award and obtained the milestone by reaching the 5 Million Dollar Club for total production.

Gary Sobczak achieved the Excellence in Production Award for 2012.

Scott Wagner, branch manager based out of Findlay, achieved the Excellence in Sales Award for 2012.

Grand Lake hospice volunteer awarded

Grand Lake Hospice volunteer Fern Johns has been selected as a Daily Point of Light honoree. The Daily Point of Light award, through the Points of Light Institute, was established by President George H.W. Bush in 1993 and reinstated in 1998. President George H.W. Bush continues to sign all of the awards today, along with CEO Michelle Nunn.

Johns began volunteering with Grand Lake Hospice in 2009 but has been very active in volunteering with several other organizations prior to starting at Grand Lake Hospice. She retired after 30 years of teaching and began volunteering. She volunteers at St. Paulís United Church of Christ, along with volunteering at the American Red Cross bloodmobile. She also volunteers at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital and its community outreach program, along with her Grand Lake Hospice duties. She is also dedicated to her five children, 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Daily Point of Light Award honors individuals and groups creating change in communities across America.

Ford Motor Company honors Lima plant for safety

Ford Motor Company, of Dearborn, Mich. released its 2012 presidentís health and safety awards, which honors outstanding achievements at national and international Ford plants.

Lima Engine Plant received regional recognition for excellence in safety culture and standards for its line side rack and marketplace evaluation process. Lima Engine Plantís senior safety engineer, Ryan Kelly, was named health and safety professional of the year for the Americas. In addition, Lima Engine Plant employee Paula Garee was the recipient of a lifesaving award for her actions providing aid to victims of a serious car accident. She serves on Lima Engine Plantís emergency response team.

The Lima Engine Plant currently employs 960 employees who build approximately 510,000 engines annually at the plant, located on Bible Road, in Lima.


Blanchard Valley Hospital receives accreditation

Blanchard Valley Hospital has been awarded accreditation for six years as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians by the Ohio State Medical Association Focused Task Force on Accreditation.

The Ohio State Medical Association accreditation seeks to assure both physicians and the public that continuing medical education activities developed by Blanchard Valley Hospital meet the high standards of the essential areas, elements and policies of accreditation as specified by their organization.

Lima Area Medical Education Development attains accreditation

Lima Area Medical Education Development has been resurveyed by the Ohio State Medical Association Focused Task Force on Accreditation and awarded accreditation with commendation for six years as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians. Accreditation with commendation is the highest level of accreditation awarded by the Ohio State Medical Association.

Dr. Mark Winerman is the director of education, and Melissa Watkins is the program manager.


Verhoff appointed as office manager

The Union Bank Company has appointed Kim Verhoff, assistant vice president, to the office manager position at the Union Bank Columbus Grove location. She was recently the consumer lender for the Columbus Grove branch.

Verhoff has more than 25 years of banking experience, working in lending, branch management and sales. She completed her bachelorís degree in communications from The Ohio State University.

She is a member of the Columbus Grove Chamber of Commerce and formerly a finance committee member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.


Reddy attains professional license

Casey Reddy, of Garmann/Miller & Associates in Minster, recently passed his professional engineering examination and is now a licensed professional engineer in Ohio.

To qualify for the professional engineering exam, Reddy passed the fundamentals of engineering exam in October 2008 and met the minimum requirement of having four years of engineering experience with an accredited degree.

He is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditional Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and is a LEED AP. He holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from The Ohio State University and has been with the firm for almost five years.
