Laugh your way through Comedy Jam

January 25, 2013

FINDLAY — Forget the cold. Warm up instead with the crowd waiting to laugh at the 11th annual Comedy Jam on Saturday at Central Auditorium in Findlay.

This year, comedians Shawn Felipe, Samuel Comroe and Arvin Mitchell will bring their brand of PG-13 humor to the annual event. And for the first time, a fundraiser will be tied to the laughs with an auction to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a nonprofit that funds the social service work of the Actors Fund and awards grants to AIDS service organizations across the country. The auctioneer for that benefit will be Ohio Senator Cliff Hite.

“Cliff Hite has been an educator and a coach, so he knows how to get people excited. He also is a friend of the arts, which a lot of people may not know. The students are excited to have Senator Hite join us,” said Sharinda Welton, director of student activities at the University of Findlay, which sponsors the event.

“We are very fortunate to get this level of entertainment coming here,” Welton said of the comedians. “It’s not often you can get three headline comedians to share the stage and billing with one another,” she added.

Felipe has been featured on TV and named a “Top 7 Comic” at the 36th annual Comedy Competition. His new release, “Someday This Will Be Funny” will be available soon. Comroe has won a number of comedy competitions, and made his debut on Conan in November as he continues to open for other comedians. Mitchell is the former co-host of BET’s “Club Comic View” and is a big draw on the college and military circuits.

“This show is always popular. When we started this on the Findlay campus, we did it because everyone was getting cabin fever but didn’t want to wander far from their dorms,” Welton said. The popularity of the event prompted the university to open it to the public, and the rest, as they say, is history.
