LIMA — Prosecutors say a man who lived with a woman earlier this year raped her two young children while he was alone with them.Ned Cook, 42, is charged with nine counts of rape of a child under 10 and two counts of gross sexual imposition. The charges carry a possible sentence of life in prison.Assistant Allen County Prosecutor Chris Steffan said Cook performed sexual acts on his girlfriend's 6-year-old old daughter and 3-year-old son. The acts began last year and stopped in January when one of the children told an uncle.Cook's attorney, Steve Chamberlain, said Lima Police found no physical evidence of a sexual assault. The children also were examined at the hospital and had no signs of trauma.“There is no physical evidence, whatsoever, tying my client to any sexual assault with any of these children,” Chamberlain said.Chamberlain said Cook was interviewed by police for five hours and made some incriminating statements but asked jurors to keep an open mind and decide the case on all the evidence.Steffan called the young girl to the witness stand. She spent most of the time turned away from Cook looking down. She said she was in bed naked with Cook but would not say much about anything that happened even with the prosecutor trying to lead her along.“He was on top of me,” was the most the young girl would say. The child's uncle by marriage, Glenn Davis, told the jury the young girl was staying the night with him and his wife when the alleged crime surfaced. The next morning he woke and was watching a movie when a sex scene prompted the girl to tell him what had happened.“She said, ‘Ned does that to me,'” he said. “She said, ‘He touches his bad spot to my bad spot.'”The prosecutor also called the child's mother to the stand. She said she and Cook dated off and on for six years before moving in together last year. When she confronted Cook about the incident, he left that day then returned. She called the police and he left for good, she said.Prosecutors began playing a video tape of an interrogation Lima Police had with Cook. They will resume the video in the morning. You can comment on this story at www.limaohio.com.
