It‚??s 2154. Paraplegic ex-marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) ‚??starts fresh in a new world,‚?Ě distant planet Pandora. He works for a mining corporation. It seeks mineral rights from the Na‚??vis, Pandora‚??s indigenous population. To get what it wants, the corporation uses two methods: force, Colonel Miles Quaritch‚??s (Stephen Lang) preferred strategy and negotiation, championed by scientist Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver). Jake works in Grace‚??s ‚??Avatar‚?Ě program. Matched to a laboratory created Na‚??vi, Jake, like a gamer, directs his avatar as it enters the Na‚??vi world. But he ‚??gets lost in the woods,‚?Ě as the Colonel derisively says, falling in love with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a beautiful Na‚??vi. ‚??Out there is the true world,‚?Ě Jake says of Pandora. ‚??In here (the human world) is the dream.‚?Ě
Will the Na‚??vis save their peaceful and spiritual way of life from the corporation‚??s assault? Which world will Jake choose? Can you resist ‚??Avatar‚??s‚?Ě sumptuous tropical paradise?
Competent actors whom we see as themselves include Sam Worthington (Jake), Sigourney Weaver (Grace), and Stephen Lang (the Colonel). Each plays a stock adventure-flick character. Jake, young hero on a quest to find his true self; Grace, tough scientist (an extension of the character she played in the ‚??Alien‚?Ě franchise); and the Colonel, by-the-book, macho military man with no sympathy for science or the Na‚??vis. ‚??Blue monkeys,‚?Ě he calls them.
Actors whom we see only as motion-capture Na‚??vis include Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, who saves and falls in love with Jake, and CCH Pounder as Moat, Wes Studi as Eytukan and Laz Alonso as Tsu‚??tey. Michelle Rodriguez plays pilot Trudy. Giovanni Ribisi is corporate bad guy Parker Selfridge.
‚??Avatar‚?Ě is a stunningly beautiful, sci-fi action-romance. Director/writer James Cameron‚??s astonishing film immerses us in an alternate world of six-legged horses, flying lizards, phosphorescent plants and floating mountains. Add beautiful, 10-foot, cat-like blue humanoids with golden eyes and who can resist? Especially in 3-D. (I saw it both ways.) It‚??s good guys versus bad guys as the Na‚??vis, bonding naturally with Pandora‚??s plants and animals, confront invading ‚??sky people‚?Ě in search of energy for their dying planet. Jake and Neytiri are caught in the middle, pulled away from each other by their racial ‚??families,‚?Ě but mated for life by their love. Think Romeo and Juliet in outer space, but add a 30-minute epic battle at the end.
Rated PG-13 for intense battle sequences, warfare, sensuality, smoking and language. ‚??Avatar‚?Ě runs 162 minutes. A film event for older kids and adults, with brilliant motion-capture animation and CGI. (For 3-D, go to Findlay.)
