KALIDA — After volunteering with Putnam County Habitat for Humanity, Ben Schroeder now sees a different side of construction. The Kalida High School senior is in his fourth year of the Project Lead the Way pre-engineering program at Kalida.“For our first project this year,” Schroeder said, “we had to research all these architectural styles and then construct our own house in one of the styles, based on a scenario for a Habitat for Humanity customer. We had to plan the house, construct it, and create a computer version. I designed an Italianate home.”Schroeder now has a broader knowledge of all the engineering fields, he said.“Our first year in PLTW, we had an introduction to engineering, and then sophomore year was an elaboration of the different fields,” he said. “Last year, we studied digital electronics, which is electrical engineering, and this year, we're working on civil engineering and architecture. It's pretty cool.”Schroeder said he plans to study civil engineering in college.“I have an interest in the structural side of buildings, but I'm keeping my options open. I've always liked math and science,” he said.At Kalida, Schroeder volunteers as a member of the National Honor Society, Cats Who Care student service organization, and as an elementary school tutor. He also works on the yearbook staff and has participated in school musicals. His junior year, Schroeder received a West Point Leadership Award.“It goes to students who succeed in both academics and athletics,” he said.In sports, Schroeder plays varsity basketball and baseball for the Wildcats. He also ran cross-country and played soccer.“I enjoy playing sports. I'm a competitive person. I never give up on anything,” he said.Schroeder said he especially enjoys playing basketball.“The thrill of making a basket is pretty cool, and I like competing with friends and meeting people,” he said.Beyond sports, Schroeder continues his competitive nature, he said.“I like to take a simple task, like maybe household chores, and turn it into a sport. It's got to be done right, done well, and done fast,” he said with a laugh. In addition, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Kalida, Schroeder serves as an usher and Mass server.
