A determined global effort has dramatically reduced the number of countries with polio from 125 in 1988 to only a handful in Asia and Africa today. But completely eradicating the disease remains elusive, with fresh outbreaks resulting in 1,000 new cases every year.  Check out this map showing polio's decline in the world and a video about India's eradication team.
