LIMA — A former nurse at a local nursing home pleaded not guilty to a sexual charge involving a patient at the facility.Alfredo Arrizola Jr., 40, of 1554 W. Wayne St., is charged with gross sexual imposition, a fourth-degree felony that carries up to 1.5 years in prison.Arrizola is out of jail on bail and has a pretrial hearing scheduled for Feb. 10. He is accused of having a sexual encounter with a male patient at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home on Fort Amanda Road, said Assistant Prosecutor Dan Berry. “It was discovered when the male patient told his significant other,” Berry said. Shawnee Manor Administrator Jessica Trinko said the nursing home staff takes allegations of abuse very seriously and has procedures in place to prevent such issues as well as to deal with anything that happens.“This was a very isolated incident and as soon as this facility was made aware, we took the appropriate action to make sure all of our residents were safe,” Trinko said. The matter also was referred to Ohio Department of Health, which came in and did a thorough investigation that included reviewing policies and procedures. That agency found no wrongdoing on the part of Shawnee Manor, Trinko said.Arrizola, who was hired in 2004, passed a thorough background check, which included checking for a criminal record and contacting references, Trinko said.“There had never been any indication he was a problem,” she said. Shawnee Manor immediately put Arrizola on leave when information surfaced on the incident. He was fired Nov. 18, Trinko said.Shawnee Manor has annual training for its employees on abuse and information is posted throughout the facility on how to report abuse should it occur, Trinko said.Nurses at a nursing home typically administer medication, treatments and help with the activities of daily living. The 56-year-old patient has since left the facility when he was able to return home, Trinko said. You can comment on this story at www.limaohio.com.
