LIMA — In taking over as principal of Heritage Elementary School, Jed Dorsey plans to keep the school's momentum and success going. “We have a lot of great kids, great family members, a great staff,” he said. “We have had a lot of success in the past, and I just want to lead the way into the future.”The Lima school board hired Dorsey, 34, Thursday. The Heritage teacher will take over next school year for interim Principal Jean Snyder. She has been at the school since Kevin Fraley left in February.Dorsey, originally from Kenton, has taught at Heritage since 2008. He is currently a Title 1 teacher. He taught at Ridgemont schools in Hardin County for seven years.Fifty people applied for the position. A committee of Heritage teachers and staff narrowed the group down to 10 to be interviewed. Three were asked back for second interviews. Assistant Superintendent Jill Ackerman said Dorsey brings great existing relationships and knowledge of the district.“He knows the staff, he knows the routine. He comes in knowing parents, knowing where kids are academically,” she said. “He just comes in already having some good background and that helps a lot.”Heritage has been the highest achieving school building academically for many years, including being deemed an excellent school by the state. Dorsey said the school will continue to strive for success and place emphasis on student growth.“We are going to continue high-quality instruction,” he said. “And a respectful, focused, learning environment.”You can comment on this story at www.limaohio.com.
