Letter: Lima gouges with cost of back taxes

My daughter was one of the lucky ones who got audited by the city of Lima for the years 2004 to 2009. Come to find out she never paid any city income tax. Nobody ever told her she had to pay them. To me, someone dropped the ball. There was an organization that helped her get the job. Why didn't they say anything about taxes? Her employer never said anything, and the city of Lima never said anything. Now the city says she owed for the past six years plus late fees and interest. The total is $2,760. Roughly half of that is the actual taxes, and the rest is interest and late fees. I told the city finance director that we are willing to pay the actual taxes, but could he waive the interest and late fees? He said he couldn't do it because the city then would have to do it for everyone. The collection agency said they could set up a payment plan for a year. That comes to $230 a month. She can't afford it. To make a long story short, I want her slate clean, so I paid it and she will pay me back because that's the kind of person she is. I just feel like the city is gouging her for every penny they can get. Where's the compassion?
