LIMADean Fillips Vaffis, 85, of Fremont, formerly of Lima, died peacefully the evening of Jan. 18, 2011, with her family by her side.She was born Dec. 6, 1925, in Lima to George and Aphrodite Fillips, who preceded her in death. On May 26, 1956, in Lima, she married James C. Vaffis, who survives. They were married for 54 years.Mrs. Vaffis was an executive assistant to the president of Lima Baldwin Hamilton before she was married. She will be remembered for her Greek culinary skills and was a master baker at Jimmy John's Restaurant, Fremont, that was famous for its homemade pecan, pumpkin and custard pies. She was an avid golfer and was introduced to the game by her husband. Together they developed a world of wonderful friends around the game in Fremont and in Florida.She was a life member of Cosmopolitan and a docent at the Hayes Museum at Spiegel Grove. She had been a volunteer at Fremont Memorial Hospital and had been a buyer for the hospital gift shop for several years. She loved traveling around the world with her husband and friends and instilled the curiosity and joy of travel in her children. She was an impeccable hostess, who maintained her elegance and caring nature toward her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends her entire life. To her husband and children she will always be their most enthusiastic cheerleader, toughest critic and best friend.Survivors also include two daughters, Ann (Pete Schumann) Vaffis, of Washington, D.C., and Gigi (David Wagner) Vaffis, of Chicago; and two grandsons, Wade Wagner and James Wagner.She was preceded in death by a son, George Vaffis; and two sisters, Zee Kanatas and Pauline Hontas.Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Keller-Ochs-Koch-Mason Funeral & Cremation Service, Fremont. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutherford B.
