LeipsicVelma Altman Schmenk, 88, died at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23, 2011, at The Meadows of Leipsic in Leipsic.She was born May 23, 1923, in Miller City to George and Mary Luttfring Niese, who preceded her in death. On Dec. 30, 1941, she married, Herbert Altman, who died Aug. 30, 1992. They were married for 50 years. On June 24, 1994, she married Leonard Schmenk, who died Sept. 4, 2010.Mrs. Schmenk was a caterer for several years for area weddings, graduations and anywhere good food was needed. She also worked several years with her husband at Altman's Ashland, Leipsic. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Leipsic, where she was a Eucharistic minister, member of the Altar Rosary Society and the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was a member of the American Legion Post 287 Auxiliary, Leipsic. She loved crocheting, cooking and playing cards and bingo.Survivors include three children, Donald (Connie) Altman, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Carl (Janet) Altman and Sue (Bruce) Meyers, both of Leipsic; 13 grandchildren; 5 stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-great-grandchild; three sister,: her twin, Thelma Kuhlman, of New Cleveland, Irene Kahle, of Columbus Grove, and Rita Clapp, of Delphos; and a brother-in-law, Linus Rosengarten, of Leipsic.She was preceded in death by a sister, Arlene Rosengarten; and a great-granddaughter; Madison Meyers.Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Leipsic. Father George Wenzinger will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Leipsic, where an Altar Rosary and CLC rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Church or the charity of the donor's choice.Condolences may be expressed at www.lovefuneralhome.com.
