Irene F. Swartz, 94, died at 8 a.m. March 15, 2008, at Elmcroft Assisted Living.
She was born Jan. 15, 1914, in Elida to Sherman and Lydia Stemen Swartz, who preceded her in death.
Miss Swartz was a member of Salem Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday school and led Sunday worship songs. She was a 1932 graduate of Gomer High School. She was retired from Lima Woolen Mills, and had worked as a cook in Pottstown, Pa., at the Irene Boyer Memorial Home. Returning to Elida, she did domestic work for many families, and worked as a quantity cook for many institutions. She volunteered at the Et Cetera Shop in Bluffton. She enjoyed reading, flowers, music, singing, and playing games.
Survivors include two sisters, Bertha Whitcher, of Premont, Texas, and Jane (Albert) Good, of Elida; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Swartz, of West Liberty, and Imogene Swartz, of Lima; and 14 nieces and nephews, 30 great-nieces and great-nephews, and 18 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam, Marion and Charles Swartz; two nephews, Craig Whitcher and Robert Roth; and a brother-in-law, Forest Whitcher.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Salem Mennonite Church, Elida. The Rev. Melvin Hathaway will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, Delphos, and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee in Akron, Pa., and Salem Mennonite Building Fund.
