JOHN L. "SMILEY" DAVIDSON, 63, died at 6:24 p.m. March 25, 2005, at Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born Aug. 9, 1941, in Lima to Kenneth and Marian Roof Davidson. His father preceded him in death, while his mother survives in Ottawa. He had been married to Shirley Meyer of Columbus Grove.
Mr. Davidson retired after 30 years with the U.S. Army as a master sergeant. He was a brakeman for the Nickle Plate Railroad. He was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9142, Ottawa, and a member of the American Legion, Ottawa. He was a platoon sergeant and training noncommisioned officer with Company D, 983rd Engineer Combat Heavy Equipment, then transferred to the 416th Engineers. He served in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm, and in Somalia and other countries around the world. He loved boating, fishing and working in his yard. He was an avid model railroader.
Survivors also include a son, John D. Davidson of Phoenix; three daughters, Theresa Cirigliano and Nancy Matteson, both of Phoenix, and Vicki Davidson of Missouri; two grandchildren; a brother, James Davidson of Ottawa; two sisters, Julie (Darrell) Nichols of Columbus Grove, and Jane Mershman of Ottawa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a special companion, Diane Cogar, on Sept. 2, 2004.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa. Father Tom Hemm will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by the Ottawa VFW and American Legion.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the church.
