Mildred I. Layman, 85, died at 11:10 a.m. July 20, 2009, at Van Crest Health Care Center, Delphos.

She was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Rocky Mount, Va., to Homer and Mary Crook Thurman. On April 16, 1942, she married William J. Layman, who survives in Lima. They were married 67 years.

Mrs. Layman was a homemaker.

Survivors also include four sons, Lonnie L. (Cecilia) Layman, of Lima; Edward W. (Linda) Layman, of Union City, Jeffrey H. (Catherine) Layman, of LeMars, Iowa, and Anthony W. (Carol) Layman, of Lima; three daughters, Bonnie J. (Wilbur) Bowman, of Lima, Suzie (Ronald) Carder, of Oakwood, and Rebecca J. (Dillon) Staas, of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Joyce Thurman, of Rocky Mount, Va.; a brother, David H. Thurman, of Callaway, Va.; four sisters, Lealda E. Angle, Iris A. Powell, and Juanita Stanley, all of Rocky Mount, Va., and Pauline (Ed) Finn, of Kernersville, N.C.; and 27 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by three grandsons, Andrew Layman, Greg Layman and Andrew William Carder; and two brothers, Dewey F. and Donald M. Thurman.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Ash Grove Old German Baptist Church. The Home Brethren will officiate. Burial will be in Ash Grove Cemetery, Lima.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel.
