LUTHER “JACK” SHEPHERD, 74, died at 3:50 p.m. Dec. 11, 2004, at his residence in Alger.

He was born on Nov. 28, 1930, in Floyd County, Ky., to Beecher and Katie Shepherd Shepherd Arnett. His father preceded him in death. His mother and s t e p f a t h e r, Katie and Bob Kash Arnett, survive in Alger. He first married Joan Shepherd and they were divorced. He then married Edith Spencer on Feb. 2, 1972, and she died April 18, 1994. He then married Christina Avalos on June 18, 2001, and she survives in Alger.

He retired as a command sergeant major from the U.S. Army after serving 26 years. He served in the 11th Airborne Division in Japan and Germany; he served in the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team in Korea; he served in the 187th Airborne Battle Group in Lebanon; and he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a life member of the Ada Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9381 where he served as post commander from 1983 to 1990. He also served as the district Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander from 1990 to 1993. He was a life member of AMVETS Post 1994 of Kenton where he served numerous offices since 1993. He was particularly proud of being on the Honor Guard for AMVETS Post 1994. He was a Hardin County Veterans Service Office commissioner appointed Oct. 31, 2002, and was to be reappointed Jan. 15 for another term. He was a member of American Legion Post 185 of Ada and also a member of AMVETS Post 20 of Kenton.

Survivors also include: four sons, Mark (Joyce) Shepherd of Ritzville, Wash., Michael Shepherd of Lloyd Harbor, N.Y., David (Diane) Shepherd of West Babylon, N.Y., and John Barry of Marysville; six daughters, Cheryl (Ken) McRobb of Northport, N.Y., Dawn (John) Craft of Alger, Staci (Don) Ketchum of Lima, Michele (Darryl) Nalls of Alger, Jacqueline (Nate) Smith of Portsmouth, Va., and Alicia Mielcarek of Portsmouth, Va.; two brothers, Beecher Wayne (Louise) Shepherd of Roundhead, and Edward Ray (Charlotte) Shepherd of Alger; five sisters, Lois (Bob) May of Columbus, Lorrene (Ron) Waddle of Roundhead, Lodena Joseph of Maumee, Brenda (Eugene) Pitts of Maumee, and Wanda (Robert) Bratton of Genoa; four stepbrothers, Elwood (Janie) Arnett of Alger, Richard (Julie) Arnett of Harrod, Donald (Ethel) Arnett of Alger, and Bob Kash (DeAnna) Arnett of Harrod; and 15 grandchildren, Farrah, Dawn, Stephanie, James, Melissa, Cory, Travis, Weston, Kearstin, Derek, Bret, Nathan, Joey, Kaitlyn and Vivian.

He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Reglar Shepherd; brothers, Michael and Lowell; and sisters, Bonita and Barbara Shepherd.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada. Pastor H.M. “Gus” Guthrie will officiate. Burial will be at Preston Cemetery, Alger, where graveside services will be conducted by AMVETS Post 1994 of Kenton.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A memorial service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday by AMVETS Post 1994 of Kenton at the funeral home.
