Those Dukes looking to relive their glory days on the football field will have a chance.
A Wellington vs. Keystone high school alumni game is expected to take place next month.
“It’ll renewal an old rival and get people excited for football,” Dukes alumni coach Matthew Kimmich said.
The 2001 WHS grad is looking for other graduates to fill out the roster.
Kimmich said he got excited by the sheer idea of putting on his gear and playing under the stadium lights again.
“I’ve been training my whole life for this,” he said.
Kimmich and 20 other former athletes signed up immediately to play.
It’s been more than a decade since Kimmich played on the Dukes field and more than three years since he’s played at all.
After graduation, Kimmich played defensive and running back for Malone College. He said he’s pumped to go home and join both older and younger players on the field for fun and to raise money for the district’s football program.
He said the nights on the field are some of the greatest memories he has of high school and he looks forward to reliving them.
“Friday night under the lights is like nothing else,” he said.
Positions for the alumni team are still open. Kimmich said it doesn’t matter if players graduated last year or 30 years ago — everyone is welcome. The game won’t be about competition.
Kimmich’s goal is to locate old Dukes’ plays to run.
The game was scheduled for this month but Kimmich said it was postponed and should happen before the official WHS season kicks off.
Ticket proceeds will benefit the Dukes football and cheerleading teams and the marching band.
Those interested in playing can sign up at www.alumnifootballusa.com. Registration for athletes is $75.

Former Dukes cheerleaders and marching band members are encouraged to join in too.
