Montpelier will be leaving the Northwest Ohio Athletic League, according to an announcment by its board of education and the NWOAL principals.
The Locomotives will be the joining the Toledo Area Athletic Conference for football, stay in the NWOAL for wrestling and join the Buckeye Border Conference for every other sport. The Buckeye Border Conference does not sponsor football or wrestling.
The upcoming football season will be Montpelier’s last in the NWOAL. The other sports will continue in the NWOAL for the 2015-16 school year.
Montpelier has been a charter member of the NWOAL since 1926. Montpelier also was a founding member of the Buckeye Border Conference (BBC) in 1967.
The decision will likely have the biggest impact for other NWOAL schools in football. With eight schools now competing, teams will have three non-league games to start the season, as opposed to one at the start and one somewhere in the middle.
For Swanton, that means they likely will not play Montpelier in 2015, according to athletic director Wade Haselman. In fact, on the Ohio High School Athletic Association website, it shows Swanton with non-league games against Ottawa Hills, Tiffin Calvert and Woodmore. Those games are subject to change.
