A 32-year-old Brooklyn man was charged with heroin and drug abuse instrument possession Saturday during a traffic stop in Amherst Township.

Verlin Phillips was spotted weaving around 10 p.m. along Middle Ridge Road near Hidden Valley and was pulled over, according to a Lorain County sheriff’s department report.

Phillips started acting suspicious. A pat-down revealed a hypodermic needle tucked away in his sock.

Deputies asked whether there was any heroin in the vehicle, and Phillips said he doesn’t do drugs, that the needle was from a year ago.

A search of the car turned up an open 24-ounce beer container. There was also a folded dollar with heroin powder inside.

A passenger, Jared Graham, 30, of South Amherst, was charged with having the open beer in the car.

Phillips was taken to the Lorain County Jail. His 1999 Honda was towed.
