November 28, 2013 - Sacred Hearts Catholic Church on U.S. 42 outside of Cardington was consumed by an early morning blaze on Thnksgiving day.
The fire, which is estimated to have started about 4:30 a.m., completely destroyed the building.
The fire chief said the priest locked up the church at about 10 p.m. Wednesday as usual, and that there were no signs that anyone was inside when the fire began.
Fire crews from Mount Gilead (all units), Cardington (all units), Iberia, Johnsville, Ashley and First Consolidated responded. Morrow County EMS squads 1 and 2, EMS 9 and the Morrow County Sheriff’s department also responded.
ODOT was called to the scene due to the roads becoming icy from the containment efforts. Red Cross was called to the scene to provide comfort efforts for the first responders due to the cold conditions.The electric company was called to cut power.
U.S. 42 was closed while firefighters were on scene, and reopened shortly before 8 a.m. The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to investigate.
