LIMA — Donald Franklin Shade, 83, died at 4:30 a.m. Nov. 10, 2012, at Wyngate Senior Living Community, Lima.



He was born May 15, 1929, to Walter Dean and Lawuire Hardin Shade, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 15, 1948, he married Gladys L. Rex Shade, who died Oct. 25, 2007.



Mr. Shade was a 1947 graduate of Harrod High School, where he played basketball and led the team to a county championship. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Harrod Christian Church. He loved spending winters together with his wife, Gladys, in Lakeland, Fla., and competing in the Polk County, Fla., Senior Olympics, where he won many medals.



Survivors include three sons, Randall (Lori) Shade, of Lima, Roger (Linda) Shade, of Wapakoneta, and Tom (Colleen) Shade, of Canal Fulton; five grandchildren, Meghan, Lucas, Nathan, Brandon and Bridget Shade; and two sisters-in-law, Rhea (Roger) Bechdolt and Jenny Rex, both of Lima.



He was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Dale (Mary) Shade, Paul (Mary Jo) Shade, and Glenn (Beverly) Shade; in-laws, Chester and Marcine (Hanley) Rex; a sister-in-law, Peggy Ann (Stan) Wirt; and a brother-in-law, Bobby Rex.



Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Eastside Chapel. Pastor Gary Rummel will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Westminster Cemetery, Westminster.



Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
