The Lima News of Jan. 27 published an article about the high rate of suicide locally. A friend in Illinois sent me an email Friday that troubled me. Monday, I took the material to the We Care Regional Crisis Center here in Lima. Staff person Deb talked with me, reviewed the letter and agreed it needed to be brought to someone's attention. She suggested I call the Allen County Probate Court, and Bonnie instructed me on whom to call in DeKalb, Ill. After this phone call, a friend and I prayed that God would bring about the best for our friend in Illinois. I spoke to an officer of the police department in DeKalb. He asked me to forward the email. He called back shortly, and assured me he would go to the house. Within an hour, another officer called to tell me the visit was made. The officer told me he would keep the information in their records. He also gave me a stern lecture not to delay calling them should I get further disturbing material from my friend. I received an email from this friend Tuesday, so we are talking. The lesson in all this: Act on your concerns. Seek out help from the offices I did. Suicide is forever, and it can be prevented.
