LimaCarl E. Binz Jr., 77, died at 2:10 a.m. Oct. 23, 2011, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.He was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Toledo to Carl E. and Josephine Ruth Bell Binz Sr., who preceded him in death. On April 29, 1990, he married Barbara Kay McGahan, who survives in LimaMr. Binz was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church. He was a respected mechanic in the Lima area for several years, starting in the mid 1950s at the Standard Oil Co., then at Marathon Oil Co., on North Street for several years. He then was owner and operator of the Marathon Oil Co. on the corner of North and Cole streets, where he was a cornerstone of the community for more than 35 years, retiring in 2001. He was a car enthusiast and enjoyed life. His greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. He was an avid fan of the Miami Dolphins. He enjoyed golfing, competitive roller skating and loved to watch movies and vacation in Florida and the Carolinas.Survivors include two sons, Michael A. (Ruth) Binz, of Lexington, Ky., and David (Julie) Binz, of Toledo; two daughters, Laura (Darryl) Hobbs, of Pensacola, Fla., and Nicolle (Gregory) Merkel, of Lima; 11 grandchildren, Allison (Pat) Fox, Andrea and Amanda Binz, Charlie and Cory Finch, Sarah and Catherine Hobbs, Caitlyn and Merri Merkel, Athena (Jonathan) Bradley and John Merkel; six great-grandchildren, Sebastian Bradley, Gabriel Bradley, Lourdes Bradley, Evangeline Bradley, William Fox and Madelynn Fox; and a sister, Sally (Jim) Decker, of Columbus.He was preceded in death by his father- and mother-in-law, Everett G. and Lucella M. McGahan.Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Father Jim Szobonya will officiate.
